After Vogue's director of special events, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, resigned last Friday, questions- mostly about Vogue's big events- have risen. There was no replacement named for Stephanie; no names at all have been mentioned. Perhaps the most noticeable contribution Stephanie made at Vogue was her contribution to the Costume Institute Gala. Add the loss to the state of the economy in relation to the cost of the gala, and you've got a hundful of issues: "Events budgets have been slashed across the board at Conde," one source says. "The Costume Institute has got to be the company's most expensive event, and Stephanie built it into what it is today. It makes no sense to pass it off to someone else." This year's event raised $2 million less than last year's, and there has been nothing said about next year's gala; last year rumors were already speculating a "fashion muse" theme. The economic state may just worsen before it gets better, though, causing designers to become reluctant to purchase tables that cost $250,000. A name not to be left out of discussion, though, is Anna Wintour. Don't think the magazine maven will let her biggest party of the year go without a good fight...
