With the economy bad, everyone is affected- especially the multi-billion dollar fashion industry, which prides itself in money. So, in Paris this year, it was expected that sales would be anywhere from dead to down15-20%. We'll have to wait to see how it plays out, but the amount of creative design was surprising.
However, next season is expected to be on the boring side, and the economy is to blame. Sticking to things like basic black and a safer design could ensure more sales for designers, and that's pretty much what we're expecting to see. The couture shows in the summer should be interesting, since they are known for avantgarde design. A Chanel couture suit can easily cost $100,000+, so this market will probably be the one affected most.
There is an economic-based fuel behind the fact that bags and shoes are being showcased and more and more on the runway, too. These things appeal to people who can't necessarily afford the clothes, so an increase in sales for these could pull designers through when their usual market isn't as responsive. It's even been proven that women tend to spend more on accessories than clothes, because they don't need to fit into them and they can use them for a longer time, therefore the money spent is going farther.
Let me know what you think!
